Sunday is Shindig time at Cottage Hill in Montgomery, with a good time for a good cause benefitting Child Protect, Children’s Advocacy Center.

“The event is put on by our Junior Executive Board, which is a group of young professionals,” said Laurel Teel, development director at Child Protect. “There are 15 of them. Their main role is to just be advocates and ambassadors for our organization. They help us with special events and they have taken this Shindig on as their signature event.”

In it’s second year, Shindig is a free, family-friendly outdoor concert on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at 454 S. Goldthwaite St. Bring lawn chairs and blankets, and maybe bring some extra change for donations,.

“It’s a fundraiser, but it’s also to raise awareness for what we do in the community,” Teel said. “It’s a free event. We encourage donations, but they’re not required to come.”

Sam Marsal will open the concert with an acoustic set, followed by Montgomery band The Sea of Cities.

“(The Sea of Cities) played last year, and everybody just loved them. We enjoyed them a lot, so we invited them back to headline this year,” Teel said.

There will be oversized games, face painting, art vendors, crafts, clothing, and, of course, food. Teel said food vendors will include That’s My Dog, Front Porch Grill, drinks from Little Donkey, and treats from Frios Gourmet Pops and The Cheesecake Empori-Yum.

Teel said each food vendor will have a tip jar, and those tips go to fund Child Protect, which will also be selling bottled water on site.

“Child Protect serves Montgomery County, and we conduct an average of over 500 forensic interviews of child abuse victims per year,” Teel said. “The majority of those cases are sex abuse cases. We also provide follow up counseling and family advocacy throughout the judicial process. All of our services are at no cost to the victims or their families. The money raised by Shindig directly funds those services that we provide for these abuse victims in the community.

Shindig’s presenting sponsor is Certified Technical Experts, a Montgomery technology and medical consulting firm. In a statement, CTE said, “Child Protect is so important to Montgomery and the surrounding area. Nearly 5 children die every day from abuse or neglect. We, as a community, have a responsibility to protect all children and we are proud to be the presenting sponsor of this event.”

Other sponsors include ALFA Insurance, Guardian Credit Union, and Steineker & Dillon Family and Cosmetic Dentistry.

“Come for a fun summer afternoon with good music, food and drinks,” Teel said.
